It should be at least 5 gallons, but it's better to have 10 gallons of water or more. If a guppy comes down with something, you can move it to this tank for treatment. Or you can use it for breeding.

Fill your tank and quarantine tank with water. Dechlorinate or allow the water to sit for a week to evaporate the chlorine out of the water before placing fish in the tank(s).

Change 25% of your water every week, siphoning the debris from the bottom of the tank.

Treat any water you will add to the tank with a water conditioner before adding.

Keep the temperature of your tanks between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Guppy babies (fry), should be fed crushed up tropical fish food flakes until they are about one inch long.
  • A recipe for fry food is just your normal fish flakes. Crush them as said earlier. Put them in a small container and pour a bit of warm clean water and mix it. Let it cool down.
  • Guppies can be very sensitive, so test the water every week. Find out how to do a fishless cycle using ammonia before you add any fish to the tank.
  • If you keep them with mollies or endlers they might interbreed.
  • Have a very big tank if you have lots of guppies.
  • Guppies don't get very big, so try to keep them with other small fish like Mollies or Swordtails so they aren't preyed on.

Especially, though typically mercury levels are not really high enough to cause alarm (unless you follow the sensationalizing press).
Not too long ago the EPA did a survey of US citizens and sent scientists the same set of questions - the public prioritized Superfund sites above anything else as the most significant environmental health threat. The scientists put that at the bottom of the list - and made air quality and food contamination by pesticides and other additives a tie for number 1.
